Shapes traffic during non congestion peaks?

Postby suthomas1 on Sat Feb 27, 2010 7:47 pm

Hi All,

Please help me to understand if Packetshaper as a device shapes only during congestion or all times. For eg, if i set a shaping (in & out) on an application to 2Mbps with a burst upto 2.3Mbps. Does this mean, it will be limited to 2Mbps during congestion or even during other times also.

Thanks in Advance!

If you set shaping to on, it applies at all times. Please make sure you understand the difference between policies and partitions before applying shaping:

1. Policies are per flow
2. Partitions are per class, regardless of the number of flows

Thanks for the answer. this means packetshaper shaping is quite different from ones we apply to router, which basically takes effect during congestion periods only.

Am i correct in this understanding.

Thanks!

Can't speak for your router, but yes, PacketShaper shapes whenever you turn shaping on.

Thanks for the reply.
So in a case where one of the class is restricted to 1Mbps & network at that moment has sufficient available b/w,
would this class be able to go above its alloted rate of 1Mbps ? or irrespective of b/w conditions, it will stick to the configured b/w figure.

Appreciate all of your assistance!

Yes,

If you have set a burst limit on the Partition then that is the max, irrespective if you still have BW to spare.

To use the max link speed when it is free set the partition to burstable without a limit and set the priority for the class to low so other users/classes can reclaim the BW when they need it.

thanks for that answer. so if i need to limit a class strictly that it doesnt exceed a particular limit all the times, i can set a bandwidth and enabling shaping on .
Will it serve as a rate limiter for this?

Thanks!
